Description :

The 3-day group excursion to the Merzouga Desert from Marrakech begins in Marrakech around 7:00-7:30 am, where we will pick you up from your riad and head to the Merzouga Desert. This is our most popular tour. Specifically, this trip is designed for those who want to explore the Moroccan Sahara Desert in a much more in-depth way and don’t mind the long hours of travel.

The most striking aspect of the excursion is the breathtaking scenery; a parade of stunning views and changing landscapes that range from the astonishing and fertile plains of Haouz (Marrakech) to the High Atlas Mountains. You’ll also pass through several valleys, oases, and rocky plateaus, followed by the impressive sand dunes of Erg Chebbi (Merzouga).

Itinerary:

Day 1: Marrakech – Boumalne Dades (06h00 by car)

Your 3-day excursion to the Merzouga Desert begins early in the morning. We will pick you up between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m. from your accommodation or the nearest accessible point . Once the group is assembled, we will depart for the Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou via the Tizi N’tichka pass and the Atlas Mountains. Several stops will be made along the way. First, we will visit the Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has served as a backdrop for several Hollywood blockbusters. We will have lunch there and then continue to Ouarzazate and visit the Kasbah Taourirt (only exterior views are permitted, as it is currently closed due to the earthquake) . In the afternoon, we will travel to Boumalne Dades via the Valley of Roses. The first day ends at our hotel, located in the Dades Valley (dinner and overnight stay).

Day 2: Boumalne Dades – Merzouga (4h00 by car)

After breakfast at your hotel in the Dades Valley, our journey begins by taking the Road of 1001 Kasbahs through the Tighir oasis. We’ll then turn onto a secondary road, driving alongside the river until we reach the Todgha Gorges. Afterward, you’ll have some free time to admire the breathtaking cliffs and enjoy lunch at a local café. We’ll then continue towards Rissani, where we’ll make a brief stop. This town is famous for its date market and was once a starting point for the ancient caravan trade that crossed the Sahara Desert to Timbuktu. Following this short break, we’ll continue to Merzouga through a rocky desert landscape. Upon reaching the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, we’ll meet our quad bikes and guide and embark on a tour across the incredible sand dunes, which change color as the sun sets over the horizon. Just before nightfall, we’ll arrive at our camp in the Sahara Desert . After some time to admire the sand dunes and surrounding landscapes, we’ll enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner and gather around the campfire. In the evening, our local nomadic hosts will entertain us with their drumming.

Day 3: Merzouga – Marrakech (9h00 by car)

After an early breakfast, we will take a camel ride back to the main road, where you will meet your driver and vehicle to return to Ouarzazate where you will have free time for lunch. In the afternoon, we continue to Marrakech through the High Atlas Mountains.

We will arrive from 6:30 pm onwards.

  • Transport in a modern minibus driven by an English/French speaking driver (maximum 17 to 20 passengers).
  • Pick-up from your hotel/Riad in the center of Marrakech (or from the nearest accessible point).
  • First night in a hotel located in the Dades Valley, including dinner and breakfast.

  • Guides (In this type of tour, guides are not always essential since we will not be visiting a large number of heritage sites. However, there are guides at historical sites that you can join with the group on a voluntary basis for a small tip or symbolic amount of approximately 3 euros.

What to pack in your luggage?

It depends on the time of year you visit. In winter, the weather is cold in Morocco, especially in the desert at night, so check a weather website first to get a better idea of ​​the exact conditions for the days you’ll be here. In early summer, from May to September, temperatures in this country reach 35-40 degrees Celsius, so you should pack as if you were going straight to the beach. You can even add to your itinerary to visit our beaches like Essaouira, Agadir, Tangier, and Casablanca, just to name a few. We have daily tours available.

Which route should you select?

The Zagora excursion is for those visiting the country for a couple of days and who don’t want to miss the opportunity to see the dunes at least once. In Zagora, the dunes are much smaller than in Merzouga but no less beautiful. Both have the magic of the desert, and the logistics until we reach Ouarzazate are the same since it’s the same route. On this excursion, the first and only night you will sleep in the Zagora desert camp.

The excursion to Merzouga, since it is further away than Zagora, is offered as a 3-day excursion; the first night is in Dades Georges and the second night you will sleep in the Merzouga camp.

Undecided between booking a private or shared tour?

The Sahara Desert tour from Marrakech is offered as a shared tour, meaning you will be accompanied by 16 other travelers from all over the world. The driver speaks English and local languages.

The private tour we offer in Spanish and local languages ​​is conducted only with the people traveling with you. The minimum is 2 people, but we can also make an exception if you are a solo traveler and an additional fee will be added.

Are you traveling alone?

There are some taboos we sometimes hear from different countries, and stories we don’t know if they’re true or not, but I highly recommend that if you have the opportunity to travel alone to this country, it’s something you should definitely do! There’s nothing to worry about, especially if you’re a woman. The only thing that might be uncomfortable is if a vendor is begging you to buy their products, and that’s about it. The city is full of tourists year-round, and security is especially attentive to tourists.

Recomendaríamos este tour 100%. El desierto del Sáhara es espectacular. Una experiencia maravillosa de la mano de Hassan. Un guía 10 que nos hizo sentir como en cada y vivir la experiencia Bereber desde el minuto 1. Sabe de todo, te ayuda, te acompaña, y se adapta a tu ritmo. Sin duda, si vais al desierto, contratar el tour con ellos! No os arrepentiries! 🙂

Toda la experiencia es muy buena, pero sin duda mi favorita fue el paseo por el desierto y dormir en las jaimas. El anochecer y el amanecer ahí son fabulosos.

Mi única recomendación para el tour es: Disfrútenlo y háganlo en cuanto puedan. El costo versus la experiencia es un muy buen intercambio.

Bueno, otra recomendación: Lleven muy buen estómago porque la comida es muy rica.

Procuren hacerlo con Hassan, para que puedan conocer algunos aspectos muy peculiares que no hay en los tours tradicionales.

Tuvimos un viaje fantástico. Los hoteles en los que nos alojamos eran de gran calidad, y dos de ellos eran realmente excepcionales. Nuestro conductor, Abdul, fue increíblemente amable y atento. Nos atendió excepcionalmente bien y siempre estuvo ahí para cualquier ayuda que necesitáramos. La experiencia en el desierto fue absolutamente impresionante y los diversos paisajes por los que viajamos fueron realmente asombrosos.

La organización del viaje ha sido perfecta y muy flexible. Youssef nos ha proporcionado un viaje 100% a medida aún con cambios de última hora (cuando un amigo no pudo venir). Totalmente personalizado. Desde el minuto 1 te sientes profundamente integrado en la cultura bereber y del país, conociendo historia, modo de vida, gastronomía pero todo explicado de manera divertida! Gracias a Youssef hemos comido en sitios locales bastante escondidos pero que te sorprenden y añaden valor al viaje. Algo muy bueno a destacar es que hacen por coincidir puntualmente con otros grupos similares para poder compartir tiempo con ellos. Por ejemplo: Nosotros vimos el partido Marruecos-España en un bar y fue súper divertido. O cantar canciones españolas en la hoguera de las haimas.
El coche es súper nuevo y muy cómodo, además nos dejaron wifi durante todo el trayecto.
Por último, recomiendo pasar al menos 3 días en el desierto ya que para mí ha sido lo más impresionante del viaje, incluso me ayudaron a reservar una experiencia en moto de 6h por las dunas que ha sido de las mejores cosas que he hecho en moto INCREÍBLE!
Volvería sin duda a repetir con ellos.
